I got back on the bike today! In an effort to get out of my funk Kamil and I went for a 16 mile ride today. We also started to clean the house and have so far done 4 loads of laundry! I told you it piled up!
The ride was great and it felt great to be back on the bike. The day was BEAUTIFUL and the air crisp, making it a perfect day to ride. We rode from our apt (138th st.) down to the WTC along the bike paths on the river. The ride was great up until around Chelsea Piers, where the bike path started getting a little busier. I always say "on your left" when going around someone. Normally, just so they know there is going to be a bike speeding by them but also, often, to let them know to please move to their right a bit so someone can pass them. People like to take up the WHOLE bike lane and therefore it's difficult to pass people.
Anyway, we were riding, I was in front and there is a guy on rollerblades, swerving throughout the bike lane, using the whole lane as his playground. I say "On your left" about three times at which point I think he hears me and starts to move to his right. As I'm passing him he swerves and almost hits me! I nearly fell off my bike! It was scary. I realize at this point that he is on his cell phone! This just makes me SO angry! You can't drive and talk on a cell phone but I see, at minimum, 10 people either on bikes or rollerblades on their phones. I don't like riding in the city cause people aren't smart! They step out into the bike lane without looking, or use the whole bike lane, or like today, there was a guy walking the wrong direction in the bike lane with his head down, texting. I love that we have these designated lanes but their needs to be some sort rules and those rules need to be enforced in some way. I have almost his SO many people cause they just step out into the lane without looking. I've almost run over dogs cause the owner has kept them on a very loose leash and they are stopped and are letting their dog do whatever. I'm very frustrated. We had stopped riding along the river and started riding in Central Park instead because of these very reasons. Although Central Park has it's own problems it's better than by the river. I think we'll have to go back to that.
I really don't want the blog to consist of negative things but I really felt the need to write this. We go riding several times a week and often things like this happen and I never write about it. I just wish there were universal rules to the bike path!
In happier news, my sister posted pictures of my precious niece on her flickr today. She's CRAWLING!!! I can't believe she's so big now! I think she needs to be Snow White for Halloween cause I just thinks she would make the best little princess in the world! I can't wait to see her at Christmas time! It really can't come fast enough!
